ATLAS ORTHOGONAL

Chiropractic Care in Vancouver

“Atlas orthogonal is a chiropractic program used to find and correct subluxation based on scientific and biochemical procedures. The effects of spinal subluxation are very important and have been determined, researched, and documented.” - Dr. Roy W. Sweat Developer of Atlas Orthogonal

The Atlas Orthogonal chiropractic method is a very specific and precise chiropractic treatment without drugs, surgery or spinal manipulation. It uses a percussion instrument to adjust a subluxation (misalignment) of atlas vertebra, the first vertebra of the spine.

Atlas is the very first vertebrae that the head sits on. Orthogonal means at right angles, or square.

The atlas should be at the sitting level on the cervical spine (neck), and the head should be square on the atlas.  It basically asks the question: Is your head on straight?

When the atlas is misaligned (subluxated) it causes the head to tilt.  The body instinctively tries to straighten the head up while keeping the head over the feet (center of gravity). The body then reacts automatically to try to straighten the head while keeping it centered over the feet. This instinctive search for a return to body balance causes a great deal of stress on the spine, the shoulders, pelvis, hips, knees, and ankles.

Subluxations (misalignments) are often deceiving. Even though symptomatic pain may appear in the lower back, legs, shoulders, arms or other parts of the body, their cause is very often located in the cervical spine (neck).

How does this unique method differ from General Chiropractic treatment?

One of the most obvious differences is the gentle way in which the doctor works.  No strenuous manipulation is needed. No crack or twist of the neck.

The Atlas Orthogonal (A.O.) chiropractic is developed by Dr. Roy W. Sweat with the aid of engineers at Georgia Tech University.  The precision of the A.O. instrument was designed to deliver a precise chiropractic adjustment based on the specific misalignment findings from the x-rays, allowing for an adjustment that requires such a light force that patients, who may expect more forceful manipulations as part of their treatment, find it hard to believe anything effective has been accomplished.  Their doubts and fears quickly vanish when their pain and discomfort disappear.
