Posture Correction With Chiropractic Care
A healthy, balanced posture is more than just looking good and young, it is also a reflection of your overall health and the health of your spine. Good posture can help with:
Maintaining correct alignment of bones and joints
Reducing stress on ligaments, minimizing the risk of injury
Conserving energy as muscles are used more efficiently
Decreasing abnormal joint wear and tear
Preventing muscle strain, overuse and/or pain
Research has shown that poor postures may increase feelings of depression, influence your confidence and stress levels and could have an impact on your digestive tract.
So.. what is posture?
Posture is how you hold your entire body. There are two types of postures:
Dynamic posture is how you hold yourself when you are moving, like when you are walking, running, or bending over to pick up something.
Static posture is how you hold yourself when you are not moving, like when you are sitting, standing, or sleeping.
It is important to ensure that you have excellent dynamic and static posture.
The key to good posture is the position of your spine.
Your spine has three natural curves - at your neck, mid-back, and low back. Correct posture should maintain these curves. Your head should be above your shoulders, and the top of your shoulder should be over the hips. However, it is common to see either loss of spine curvature or an increase in spinal curvature, both lead to an increase in stress onto your spine and body and can change your posture.
It is the shifting of the spine on the inside that creates our outward posture appearance also known as “text-neck” or forward head posture.
The most common profile is the slouched profile; this is where the shoulders are rounded, the head leans forward and the body stoops. Studies indicate that 90% of the world’s population has this posture profile to some degree.
Many of our patients have poor posture. In many cases, they know their posture isn’t ideal yet they are not sure where to begin the treatment process. Should they go with braces, exercises, stretches or see a healthcare professional?
At our clinic, we are able to provide effective spinal correction which results in different outcomes including postural changes.
We first look for the exact areas causing your problem. We then adjust and correct your spine alignment, allowing you to engage muscles that have been overcompensating over the past years.
We recommend a comprehensive approach that includes how to implement an ongoing management and care plan that you can take home with you. With our help and advice, you will hopefully & gradually be able to maintain a good posture for many years to come.
What happens if you don’t correct your poor posture?
Poor posture contributes to many back and neck conditions. It can lead to your joints and soft tissues adapting to the new “normal”, which makes correction more difficult the longer it goes on.
Here is what’s possible to happen if not corrected:
Lack of mobility
Repeated injuries in sport as a result of muscle imbalances or weakness
Core muscle weakness
Tight joints or muscles, especially in the chest, shoulder and hip areas
There are also some factors that contribute to poor posture, these include:
Weak postural muscles
Abnormally tight muscles
Here are some tips and lifestyle changes we recommend you start with to improve your posture:
Sit straight and make an effort to do so
Be aware of your posture and how you walk, sit and stand
Avoid using your phones and laptops for prolonged periods of time
Avoid sitting for more than 2 hours at a time
Have a firm and supportive mattress and pillow when sleeping
Get a standing desk at work to avoid sitting for a prolonged period of time
Stretch a few minutes every day
Drink a lot of water
Get maintenance chiropractic treatments
See your chiropractor regularly to check on your posture
Once your body is in alignment, you can feel more energetic, healthier, and happier overall. Your body is a delicate machine and when one part isn’t functioning as it should, it affects all the other parts.
